Alexander Taylor,
the son of David (a naval officer) and Isabella (née
Stuart) Taylor, was born in 1826 in Dundee,
Forfarshire (now called Angus)—a maritime county in
the east of Scotland extending from the North Esk
River to the Firth of Tay. It was there that his
parents were married on 22 January 1821.
According to his death certificate, Alexander
Taylor, a surveyor by profession, married Margaret
Saunders when he was about 55. His wife was actually
Margaret Saunders Taylor, his cousin, who had not
long been in Australia. They became the parents of
two sons: Charles Stuart (b. 14 April 1886) and
Alexander Stuart (b. 15 June 1890)..
Alexander Taylor died at the School House, Brown’s
Plains, on 13 September 1901 at the age of ‘75 years
7 months and 17 days’. He was laid to rest in the
Cooper’s Plains Cemetery two days later in a service
at which the official witnesses were W Wreford and
William King. The burial was certified by Hans
Henricksen.
Margaret Saunders Taylor,
the daughter of James Stuart (an army engineer) and
Amelia (née Banks) Taylor, was born in Birkenhead,
England about 1846. Her parents, both Scottish-born,
were married in Dundee on 11 August 1845. At the
time of the 1851 census, the family were living in
Broad Street, in the market town of Knighton,
Radnorshire, Wales: James Stuart (28, corporal in
the Royal Sappers), Amelia (28), Margaret Saunders
(5), Jane Isabelle (3) and James (1).
Margaret trained as a teacher before emigrating to
Queensland where she taught at Sarabah, Tabragalba,
Reidville, Brown’s Plains Provisional School and
Toorbul. She was living with her son Charles at
Palen Creek when she passed away on 13 May 1917. Her
burial took place in the Beaudesert Cemetery in a
service conducted by the Reverend CMP Heath of the
Church of England.
Charles Stuart Taylor
died at Palen Creek aged 73 on 22 November 1959 and
was buried in the old section of the Beaudesert
Cemetery (row 8 grave 25) after a service in St
Thomas’s Church of England.
Alexander Stuart Taylor
married Theresa Reynolds on 20 June 1916. Their
children to 1919 were: James Alexander (b. 2 May
1917; d. 21 October 1989), Margaret Olive (b. 8
December 1919), William Stuart (b. 25 December 1921;
